CASE STUDY

The RUBIK’S multifunctional cabinet is designed to store building kits, cubes, Lego, boardgames and more. Incorporated into the design is a desk for drawing, modeling and crafts. The cabinet also contains several smaller drawers for art supplies or other equipment, and two bottom drawers (with a retractable playing surfaces on wheels) that can be locked into place. In addition, you will find there a chalk board and a flip chart attached to the sides.

The main function of this “smart” cabinet is to help children develop their artistic skills as well as enhance their creativity, practical skills and knowledge. It is playful while educational at the same time. The aesthetics of the design took its inspiration from the Rubik’s cube – particularly the colors, and the tic-tac-toe design in term of drawer handles.

From a technical point of view the butt joint was the best choice for all the components, including the fronts of the drawers. These are mounted with screws or nails. For larger pieces, the drawer-lock-joints are the best solution, as they are more stable. The table top is fixed by tongue and groove corner joints. Moreover, all the drawers include soft closing drawer runners to allow them to close silently.
